What does TCU stand for?

TCU was founded on the guiding Buddhist principles of loving kindness and altruism, to uphold the sanctity of life through action. Awakened to the nature of the worldly suffering of people, of the pain of illness and its causal link to poverty, the venerable Master Cheng Yan devoted herself to alleviating affliction through direct action. Thus, in order to serve the needs of her community, she journeyed far and wide to share her message of compassion and gather charitable resources. By 1986, she was finally able to establish the first fully equipped public hospital in the area,¬ Tzu Chi Buddhist Hospital today.

Confronted with the realities of meeting the medical needs of the community, Master Cheng Yan remarked“Famous doctors are easy to get, but good doctors are hard to find.” Encountering the disparity between status and competence, and the problems of competence without “care,” she sought to systematically train the medical professionals needed to truly “care“ for their patients. Thus, in order to raise“good” doctors who would truly“care” for their patients out of a compassionate devotion to humanity, she began with their roots: Education.

In 1994, The Master established Tzu Chi School of Medicine (College of Medicine) with the aim of “Raising the standard of Eastern Medicine, developing outstanding medical and nursing talents for society, and improving the well-being of all people.”

After the recognition of academic achievements through years of hard work, Tzu Chi Medical College officially became “Tzu Chi University” in August of 2000. TCU then expanded with the introduction of Undergraduate, Graduate, and Ph.D. programs; while opening a new and experimental kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school.

Tzu Chi approaches education holistically. Here, a complete university education derives from a complete classroom education system, meaning: many of our students have been instilled with Buddhist principles of compassion, gratitude, and joy for all humanity from a young age, in addition to receiving a well-rounded education strategically designed to optimize learning in order to strengthen the impact of their contribution to the world.

Tzu Chi Facilities

Tzu Chi as an educational entity is not limited to the university level: we offer a total educational pathway available for the entirety of our students’ academic lives starting from daycare in infancy, all the way through high school, and beyond. In fact, Tzu Chi operates many preschools and kindergartens; elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the country. Many of our native students grow up sharing this pathway together, and find an easier time adapting to campus life for it. They tend to be surrounded by cherished friends they have known all their lives, guided by the great love so intrinsic to the Tzu Chi experience, all along the way.

We are well known for raising students from the ground up, instilled with the same core values of conscientiousness in service for the good of the world that move us to compassionate action. Naturally, the inherent culture of kindness and collective devotion to protect life so deeply embedded within our student body generates an easy atmosphere of peace, safety, and guidance in which to learn. At Tzu Chi, students driven to truly make a difference in the world can freely work to realize the fruition of their dreams, surrounded by authenticity and sincere camaraderie. Here, perceived differences are explored with a sense of sharing and adventure, and diversity and inclusivity are givens; both honored, and taken entirely for granted.

If you are looking to settle in at Tzu Chi, have no fear. No matter where you come from or what your background is, you will be cherished and supported for who you are and what you truly resonate with. At Tzu Chi we emphasize purpose in alignment with the greatest good, over status: oneness, over duality. We truly care for the welfare of each of our students, while sharing a collaborative responsibility to raise each other up as much as possible. We are here to raise the consciousness of the entire planet, and we believe that is accomplished through great love based on truth, interconnectivity, and freedom. “Tzu Chi” is not merely an institution, but a home of great love; not just an organization, but a way of being. We welcome you, compassionately, with open hearts and helping hands, for the good of the whole planet.

Tzu Chi Facilities

Tzu Chi not only in universities, but also operates many kindergartens, elementary schools, and high schools across the country. Therefore, if you start studying in college from a young age, your friends will go to college together, making it easier to adapt. Not only that, but based on the operating experience of many schools, we are working hard to create a better education and environment. Each school conducts various activities through active exchanges. In addition, it also creates an environment where they help each other.

*Foreshadowing – When it comes to child education, it is easy to come across a practice environment of caring for young children, and to experience a lot of parenting experience before finding a job. Teenagers can also visit the various environments of the university in advance to cultivate their dreams, and our students can receive medical treatment at a lower price at the hospital in the school.
