Department Introduction
Our department is the only one in eastern Taiwan that offers university students both child development and family education studies.
We prepare students to become professionals with skills and knowledge in early childhood education and childcare, family education, child guidance, and special education.
The following are our unique features:
1. We offer service-learning programs to cultivate students’ capabilities to serve others, design projects, and enhance their team spirit:
-
-
- Perform children’s dramas
Students organized Yabi Children’s Theater to perform children’s dramas each year, in Hualien County areas with fewer resources. Their performances raise the public’s awareness of family education, enhance children’s humanistic spirits, respect toward gender equality, and enable young children to appreciate their cultural diversity. As a result, our students foster their humanistic culture, and local children gradually build their correct values and refined characters.
Students run the library and provide toys and learning materials for parents and children to learn together during weekends.
-
-
- Offer family education programs for local indigenous families
Students carry out programs funded by the Ministry of Education and focus on enhancing family relationships, health and safety issues, and the management of family resources.
-
-
- Care for children with special needs and support of their families
Students organize three volunteer groups (the Group for Leading Outdoor Activities; the Respite Service Group; and the Family Care Group) to serve children with special needs. Student volunteers of these groups have been assisting children and their families in the Hualien area for many years.
-
-
- Offer other programs to local communities
Students attend to the needs of communities and offer programs in gender education, education for indigenous children, and activities for the elderly.
2. We provide opportunities for students to enhance their interdisciplinary capabilities:
The department offers numerous elective courses other than the three major groups mentioned above. It also encourages students to take classes, preparing themselves to become high school teachers or choose double majors.
3. We offer international exchange programs:
Students may receive their clerkship or internship training overseas, serve the needy abroad, or study overseas as exchange students.
