Department Introduction
The department has always adhered to the ideals of Tzu Chi University by providing diverse instruction, enhancing students’ interest in learning, and improving teaching effectiveness through practical operations.
We offer service-learning programs for students to serve communities and put learning into action. Moreover, to assist students in learning, we provide abundant learning resources. To attend to students’ needs in their daily lives, we work with others to give them good support.
The bachelor’s program aims to cultivate professional social workers with compassionate and humanistic spirits. The master’s program prepares students to become professional social workers with service, research, supervision, and management capabilities.
In addition, we provide the following to our students:
1. Carry out two-way teaching methods
To cultivate students’ independent thinking and practice capabilities, we focus on a two-way interaction between them and faculty members to enhance their ability to analyze and solve social work issues.
2. Provide courses for students to acquire practical experience
The department aims for students to acquire skills and knowledge in social work and put them into practice. Thus, the department offers numerous elective courses. Some of them are Social Casework Simulation Practice; Group Plan, Design, and Leadership Practice; Community Work Practice; and Statistical Software Practice.
3.Fulfil university social responsibility
The department works with Tzu Chi Foundation, which provides students with scholarships, internship training, and employment opportunities. The department also collaborates with other social welfare institutions around Taiwan (especially the eastern region) for students to gain firsthand experience in social work. To attend to the needs of local communities, we work with numerous local institutions in the social work arena.
4. Offer service-learning courses and activities for students to serve the needy in Taiwan and overseas
The department works with local institutions to offer service-learning courses, so that faculty members and students can attend to local needs. Students organize volunteer groups to give children living in indigenous areas health-related knowledge and teach them how to take care of themselves. Some students take an elective course, which requires that they serve in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, etc., with a long-term goal of empowering local people to help each other.
