Health Insurance Card

The National Health Insurance Administration adopted the use of an NHI card for all individuals enrolled in the program beginning on January 1, 2004. The card generally carries a picture of the insured, making it unnecessary to bring your ID to a medical institution when seeking medical attention. The chip embedded in the card stores records of your last six medical visits, information on catastrophic illness, records of all important tests, and medication information, which will be helpful when patients see a doctor.

The issuance of the first NHI card is free of charge, and there is no handling charge. Foreigner who apply for NHI card printed with a photo, can go to any NHIA regional division (please refer to the bottom part of Home Page) with ID (original) and one 3.5×5 (cm) photograph. If you appoint a representative to apply for an NHI card on-site, that person should present their ID and your ID to NHIA staff for verification.

Besides, applicant can also fill out “Application For NHI Card” (Download the application form) to apply for first NHI card, attach a copy of national ID and one 3.5×5 (cm) photograph(photograph is optional for newborns under the age of one year old) on it, then mail the documents to the business section of any NHIA administrative office.

The cost of the health insurance card 826 yuan per month.

No need to bring ID documents for medical treatment, the cost of medical treatment is relatively cheap.
