Clinical Electives Program for Foreign Medical Students

The Clinical Electives Program is a great opportunity for students to enhance their medical knowledge by gaining practical skills while training alongside our faculty physicians.

Eligibility

Students studying at international medical schools who are in their last two years of medical school are eligible to enroll in clinical electives.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Students studying at international medical schools who are in their last year of medical school are eligible to enroll in clinical electives.

Graduates and clinical professionals are not eligible for the clinical electives program.

How long is the program?

We offer clinical electives in many sub-specialties of medicine. These are elective programs and do not meet requirements for core clinical clerkships. All electives are two weeks in length per clinical elective rotation. (We do not offer under two-week elective rotations for visiting medical students.) Students may apply for a maximum of four different two-week electives, but these electives must be in different specialties.

※These departments all accept international medical students and medical students who do not speak Chinese.

Please note, not all electives listed accept international students. The description of each elective on the list includes whether international students are accepted or not.

Read the descriptions of electives carefully within the application before listing your choices. You may not change your choices or dates of elective after your application has been submitted to elective department.

Application

-Application Timeline/Deadline

We recommend that you submit your application six months before the start of your chosen elective. The latest you can apply is three months prior to the desired elective’s start date. Electives are offered throughout the year, with the exception of the Lunar New Year period in February.

Tuition and Housing Costs

-Tuition
-Medicine Students
The tuition for a four-week clinical elective for students from international medical schools for the academic year 2023-2024 is NT$3,000. If it’s less than one month, it is calculated at NT$600 for 1-15 days and NT$1,200 for 16-30 days.

-Traditional Chinese Medicine Students
The tuition for a four-week clinical elective for students from international medical schools for the academic year 2023-2024 is NT$10,000. If it’s less than one month, it is calculated at NT$6,000 for two weeks and NT$3,000 per week.

※Students from TCU’s partner institutions are entitled to waive fees. You will need to check whether here is a partnership between TCU and your home institution first.

-Housing Costs
Students are required to pay for accommodation.

Tzu Chi Hospital can assist students in applying for off-campus accommodations.

Students from TCU’s partner institutions can apply for on-campus dormitories through the TCU International Office.

-Tuition
The tuition for a four-week clinical elective for students from international schools is NT$4,800. If it’s less than one month, it is calculated at NT$1,200 per week.

-Housing Costs
Students are required to pay for accommodation.

Arrangements will be made based on dormitory availability; please note that dormitory allocation is not guaranteed. If you apply, there will be a waiting period. We appreciate your patience. The monthly cost is NT 3,000, which includes water and electricity.

Language Requirements

No language requirement. While we mostly interact with patients in Chinese, it’s entirely acceptable to communicate with physicians in English.

FAQs

No, applicants must be an active medical student in good academic standing for the entire duration of their elective. Applicants must be returning to their home institution to complete studies.

In most cases, applicants are notified no later than 1 month before the desired elective rotation, which includes an official Admission Letter and pre-arrival information.

You will receive a notification after your application is approved. Please bring your passport along with any requested paperwork or required documentation.

The dress code on the wards is professional attire. Students can bring a white coat to wear on the wards. Please note that in Taiwan medical students wear short white coats – you must have a short white coat, long ones are worn by residents and fellows and will not be permitted for students.

※Please wear your physician robe with ID card during the medical elective.

(2) Deep black/blue pants.
(3) Deep black/blue shoes.
(4) Deep black/blue coats.
(5) Remain natural hair color, no hair-dyed and bizarre dress.

Yes, you must have health insurance which covers any necessary hospitalization or doctor’s visit due to illness or injury. Proof of insurance is a requirement and must be provided before an accepted student will be approved to enter the clinical setting.
